Everything You Need to Know About Raising a Happy, Healthy Kitten
Bringing home a new kitten is an exciting experience! At Purrfect Paws Cattery, we want to ensure you have all the knowledge and resources needed to give your kitten the best start in their new home. Below is a complete guide to caring for your new furry friend.
🏡 Bringing Your Kitten Home
Your kitten may feel a little shy or overwhelmed at first. Here’s how to make their transition smooth:
✔ Create a Safe Space: Set up a quiet, cozy area with a bed, litter box, food, and water.
✔ Slow Introductions: Let your kitten explore at their own pace and introduce them gradually to family members and pets.
✔ Comfort Items: Use a blanket or toy with familiar scents from our cattery to help them adjust.
🍽 Feeding & Nutrition
Providing the right diet is essential for your kitten’s growth and health.
✔ What We Feed: Feline Natural, Ziwi Peak, and Royal Canin Kitten Food (Include both wet and dry food).
✔ Feeding Schedule: Up to 6 months: 3–4 small meals per day. 6 months & older: 2 meals per day.
✔ Fresh Water: Always have clean, fresh water available.
✔ Avoid: Cow’s milk, raw meat, onions, chocolate, and any toxic human foods.
🧼 Litter Training & Hygiene
All our kittens are fully potty trained before leaving our cattery! Here’s how to maintain their good habits:
✔ Use the Same Litter Type: We recommend using “Breeder’s Choice Cat Litter” for consistency.
✔ Keep It Clean: Scoop the litter box daily and change the litter weekly.
✔ One Box Per Cat: If you have multiple cats, ensure each one has their own litter box.
🛑 Accidents? Place your kitten in the litter box after meals or naps to reinforce training.
🧸 Playtime & Socialization
Our kittens are raised in a loving home environment, making them friendly and well-socialized.
✔ Provide Toys & Scratching Posts: Helps with mental stimulation and prevents destructive behavior.
✔ Daily Interaction: Spend quality time playing, cuddling, and talking to your kitten.
✔ Safe Exploration: Allow supervised playtime in different areas of your home.
💡 Tip: Bengals and Maine Coons love interactive toys and climbing, while Ragdolls and British Shorthairs enjoy lap time and gentle play.
🩺 Health & Vet Care
Your kitten’s health is our top priority. Before adoption, all kittens receive:
✔ Veterinary Health Check
✔ First Vaccinations & Deworming
✔ Health Insurance Coverage (for 10 days)
Routine Vet Visits
🐾 8–12 Weeks: First vaccination (already completed before adoption).
🐾 16 Weeks: Second vaccination booster.
🐾 Annual Checkups: Routine health exams and vaccinations.
🚨 Emergency Signs to Watch For:
- Loss of appetite or extreme lethargy
- Difficulty breathing or persistent coughing
- Vomiting or diarrhea lasting more than 24 hours
If you notice any of these symptoms, contact your vet immediately!
🛁 Grooming & Coat Care
Different breeds require different grooming needs:
✔ Maine Coon & Ragdoll: Brush 2–3 times per week to prevent matting.
✔ Munchkin & British Shorthair: Weekly brushing to remove loose fur.
✔ Bengal: Low-maintenance coat but loves occasional brushing.
✔ Nail Trimming: Every 2–3 weeks to prevent scratching furniture.
✔ Ear Cleaning & Dental Care: Check ears weekly & introduce dental treats for healthy teeth.
🐾 Tip: Start grooming early so your kitten gets used to it!
